3. Manage Arabic writing scripts and complex scientific editorial context: needs, tools and scholarly publishing

Through its graphical features (writing direction and changing ligatures contexts), the Arabic writing has, from the invention of printing, posed a number of challenges for editing. In the contemporary scientific context, with the proliferation of tools and formats that characterize it, the aim is to find its objectives to direct its editorial project to one treatment or another, and, consequently, to opt for a particular tool. The workshop will be articulated around three axes: transliteration systems; management of Arabic writing; encoding sources in XML-TEI. The workshop does not require mastery of the Arabic language. Knowledge, even approximate, of its writing system, or a closely related language can nevertheless be useful.
Program:
- Do we really need to write Arabic? Know and distinguish the transliteration systems of Arabic
- The management of Arabic writing in an editorial context: operating systems, word processors and composition engines, fonts and keyboards
- Encoding of Arabics characters XML-TEI: Scholarly Publishing and bilingual stream

The edition is subject to the legislation on copyright and intellectual property. Also, the new publishing media pushing for adapt publishing contracts accordingly to secure the author as the editor. Moreover, the editorial structures of public research being provided differently in legal resource to address these issues, it is necessary for those involved in publishing know the principles governing copyright and contracts edition, own well understood standard contracts corresponding to the regular needs of their structure can edit as new contracts that meet specific needs

The roundtable aim is to move forward on a very commonly heard question, and actually dating from the Middle Ages: what skills are required to translate into scientific publishing? Subsidiary interrogation, should be a specialist of a particular field to translate in this field? This debate is not new, will be addressed in a context which itself is: the increasing professionalisation of the translation profession and the increased importance of translation in general in our societies. To the question Who can translate?, we can indeed offer three answers: a specialist in the field, a specialist in translation, a computer software. Invited in the framework of this roundtable a representative of each of these solutions, and  a  head of a professional translation training.
